World Markets that are coupled to the SP-500

The following are charts of some of the world markets that seem to be joined at the hip to the SP-500.

I believe it's telling that mostly these are the European and American markets. The Indian market has a somewhat more volatile correlation though it does follow in the same path.

It would seem to imply then, that the fortunes of these markets/countries are hostage to the dollar and the USA bond market. IMHO the USA equity market is subservient to the dollar and the USA bond market. For me going forward, it will be interesting to see the performance of these markets as the Treasury continues with it's tsunami of bond sales and as the USA debt (but not to that extent their debt) continues to rise.

ETFs to Trade Treasuries

Treasuries have been making the news lately. Below I have posted charts on some of the ETFs that allow us to trade the action in Treasuries.

Based on all of the above charts, my impressions are :

1. Almost all the treasuries are in a downtrend. Almost all of them had an inside day yesterday afer a big move on Thurday. I will give precedence to the Market and let it guide me as to future direction. In short closing beneath the big red candles will be bearish but not till that happens.

2. The one exception to the above is:BWX. I am cautiously bullish on this ETF.

ETF to trade VIX Futures

Currently there are 2 ETFs that provide us with an opportunity to trade VIX futures. Importnat Info: They do not trade the VIX or track the VIX. They are based on VIX futures

These 2 ETFs are VXX and VXZ. Both are (currently) offered by Barclays and info from their website is:

1. VXX: S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures™ Index TR is designed to provide access to equity market volatility through CBOE Volatility Index^® (the "VIX Index") futures. Specifically, the S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures™ Index TR offers exposure to a daily rolling long position in the first and second month VIX futures contracts and reflects the implied volatility of the S&P 500^® Index at various points along the volatility forward curve. The index futures roll continuously throughout each month from the first month VIX futures contract into the second month VIX futures contract.

A direct investment in VIX (commonly referred to as spot VIX) is not possible. The S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures™ Index TR holds VIX futures contracts, which could involve roll costs and exhibit different risk and return characteristics.

VXX has been trading only since this year Feb and below I have including a chart with it's recent trading action:

It is trading below both 20 and 50 day MA. This IMO is currently in a downtrend. I do not have enough trading history information to be able to guess on potential levels of support, but it does seem from looking at this chart that we may have resistance at approx 90 if/when it has a rebound. This ETF is not optionable - hence can't buy calls and puts.

2. VXZ: The S&P 500 VIX Mid-Term Futures™ Index TR is designed to provide access to equity market volatility through CBOE Volatility Index^® (the "VIX Index") futures. Specifically, the S&P 500 VIX Mid-Term Futures™ Index TR offers exposure to a daily rolling long position in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh month VIX futures contracts and reflects the implied volatility of the S&P 500^® Index at various points along the volatility forward curve. The Index futures roll continuously throughout each month from the fourth month VIX futures contract into the seventh month VIX futures contract.

A direct investment in VIX (commonly referred to as spot VIX) is not possible. The S&P 500 VIX Mid-Term Futures™ Index TR holds VIX futures contracts, which could involve roll costs and exhibit different risk and return characteristics.

VXZ has been trading only since this year Feb and below I have including a chart with it's recent trading action:

It too is trading below both 20 and 50 day MA. This IMO is also currently in a downtrend. I do not have enough trading history information to be able to guess on potential levels of support for this too, but it does seem from looking at this chart that we may have resistance at approx 100 if/when it has a rebound. This ETF is aso not optionable - hence can't buy calls and puts.

Technically these 2 are clearly getting oversold and just based on technicals may be due for a bounce somewhat sooner rather than later. Below are 2 charts for both VXX and VXZ with Bollinger Bands showing they both are outside the lower end of the bands.

But I pesonally do not like to catch falling knives and things that are oversold can and do get more oversold. Hence the plan for the moment would be to let the price action unfold and wait for suport levels to show up.

As an aside if/when we get a bounce in these ETFs/Futures, it may coincide with a pullback in the market. Looking at how overextended these 2 are to the downsde, makes me think that we may get that correction in the market sooner rather than later.
